What Would You Do?

Your employee has just come to you and told you that he is looking for a new job, and he expects that it will significantly reduce his availability for work.

What do you do?

You fire the guy.

Let's turn the situation around. You're the guy looking for a new job, and you've jiggered your schedule around so that you have a significant amount of time available to pursue your new job, and your colleagues are able to handle your work as well as there own.

Then there's a major order that comes in and your colleagues call you back in, saying they need your help to handle the order. You reluctantly come back to work, but you realize that you can't be effective anymore because of all of the effort you've put into your new job search.

What do you do?

You resign, and let your co-workers find somebody who can help them over the hump.

Yesterday, Obama said:
Here’s my observation and I think this may have been confirmed at the meeting today — when you inject presidential politics into delicate negotiations, sometimes it’s not helpful. The cameras change things.

In essense, Obama is saying that it is impossible to perform his role as Senator because of the publicity surrounding his campaign, and the campaign of John McCain. He's not alone in that assessment. Much has been made over the past couple of days about how many votes McCain, Obama, Biden, and Clinton have missed while out on the campaign trail.

But what can be done about it?

Well, a few years back, Bob Dole found an honerable solutions. Recognizing that it is impossible to campaign for President while effective discharging his duties as a Senator, Dole resigned from the Senate.

Now that Obama has come to the same realization, I look forward to him following Dole's lead and doing the honorable thing.

Of course, I'm not gonna hold my breath on that one.
